Holmes on Homes is a home improvement show on HGTV in Canada. Mike Holmes is a contractor who is frustrated with the number of dishonest contractors who do subpar work and leave homeowners in the lurch. Disgusted with the number of homeowners who were falling prey to these unscrupulous contractors, Mike created a show not only to expose these contractors, but also to educate homeowners on how to protect themselves. Although every episode is different, the theme is the same. Frustrated homeowners who have nowhere else to turn, call in Mike. Mike and crew arrive, examine the damage left by the previous contractors, reasure the homeowners then get to work fixing the problem.

Although there are many different home improvement shows on television today, I must say that this one is by far my favourite. Mike Holmes seems to be a genuinely nice guy who cares about the people he works for and with. As they are working, Mike and his crew talk about what was done wrong and what was done well. They discuss materials used and proceedures followed. They tell us how improper use can render the best materials completely useless. I love how Mike empowers homeowners. Many times what appears to be a simple job turns into a major job as he discovers more and more problems. The more problems he finds, the deeper he digs. Mike Holmes will do whatever it takes to make it right.

Mike Holmes and his crew went down to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina to help rebuild some of the hardest hit areas. Homes had been completely filled with water and had been left rotting and uninhabitable. Devastated residents shared their stories with Mike who vowed to provide them with a safe place to live. Unfamiliar with US building codes, Mike brought in local professionals for advice. They used the most up to date materials to provide homeowners with safe, hurricane resistant homes.

I think what it all boils down to is that Mike Holmes really cares, and it shows. Holmes on Homes is a fantastic show, hosted by a really nice man. If you have a chance I highly recommend you watch it!
