Automotive / Tires / Consider Your New Car Dealer

There are a number of reasons why you should consider buying your tires from your local new car dealer.

When I needed tires, I researched on the Internet, spoke with some friends, and went to a couple of the well known tire retail stores.  I had trouble getting information on (or making comparisons to) the tires at the discount tire chains - they were selling house brands which they claimed were 'similar to' what I wanted.

Almost as an afterthought, I checked with the car dealer where I usually have my service done.  They could get exactly what I wanted, delivered the next day for $50 less a set than any other place.

The reasons you should consider buying tires from your car dealer:

1.  They want to satisfy you and keep you as a regular service customer.  This is high margin business for them.

2.  They know which tires are recommended for your car, and may have them in stock.

3.  If you take your car there for oil changes and service, they won't give you any grief if you ask them to rotate the tires.

4.  Some dealers have decent tire prices as a loss leader to get your business or to keep you there.

5.  Occasionally, there may be 'Dealer Take-offs' at discounted prices.  Dealer Take-Offs are tires that  were original equipment on a car, however the car buyer decided to get upgraded or different tires for some reason.   If buying take-offs, make sure it is a reputable dealer, that the date code is fresh, and that you have assurances that you can return them if you don't like the way that they ride.  Make sure you get a very good discount if getting take-offs - check prices on Ebay.

My Michelins are rated 95V.  The 95 is a load capacity.  The V speed rating is for up to 149 miles per hour (240 km/h).  These specifications more than meet my needs. The tires have comfortable ride, and grip the road well.  I am very happy with these tires.

  • You are absolutely right with everything you are saying about going to the dealer. They do want your business and will most of the time will match prices. Plus, your dealer will also know the proper torque for tire replacements. I have seen many vehicles come to the dealer with a brake vibration after having a discount place replace their tires; they over tourque your lugnuts causing the brake rotor to warp. This will cost you more money in the long run! Just go to your dealer-it is the best for your car and for your pocket!

  • Great information. It makes so much sense to go to the dealer to ensure you get the right tire for your vehicle!
