Books Movies & Music / Children's Books / Jim Henson's Big Book Of Muppet Stories

One of my favorite things to do with my kids is to read to them, and get them interested in books at an early age. We have boxes full of books that we have gone through, then set aside. One book, however, stands out among them, and is one that we keep revisiting.

It is "Jim Henson's Big Book Of Muppet Stories". It is a beautiful hardcover book, measuring 8 by 11 inches, by one inch thick. This is a collection of 65 stories, which are "hosted" by Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, and Fozzy Bear. Each story is about 4 pages long, in this 255-page gem. The illustrations, which are interspersed throughout every story, are wonderfully done by Richard Waltz.

These stories are really entertaining for the kids, but what I like about them is that it keeps with the Sesame Street tradition of having a gentle moral message in each one. And, they are educational, without being heavy-handed about it. Many stories involve letters of the alphabet, or counting with numbers. Also, some of the stories are in puzzle form, such as a maze, or hidden items in a picture, etc.

I am going to keep this book as a sort of family heirloom or tradition. I will read these stories to my grandkids, just as I did their parents. Or, if my work as a parent has paid off, and they love reading as much as I do, my kids will want to have this book to share with their kids themselves.

I highly recommend this book on every level!

  • This does sound like a wonderful book... will be on the lookout for it at the store! We also read nighttime stories every night before bed. :)

  • My son is starting to like books (or, more appropriately, to tug and tear the pages!) so maybe he's not quite ready for this one. But perhaps it's one I can add to the bookshelf of "when he's old enough" books right next to A Very Blustery Day =D
