Books Movies & Music / Fiction Books / The Mysterious Island

I just finished  reading the classic Jules Verne novel "The Mysterious Island". I have seen two films based on this book and I must say the book is nothing like either of the films I have watched. This books was written in 1874.

It is a fairly lengthy book. The paperback version I have is 500 pages long. It takes a little longer to read because of the style it is written in. Like said before it was written in 1874 so it uses terms, phrases and words that are not used on a regular biases today.

The story is of 5 men from the Civil War era that have escaped the war in a large balloon and have ended up on a stranded island never populated by man before...or so they think. One of the men happens to be an engineer and can make anything out of anything. They turn this island into a working farm in just two years and even build a small boat so they can travel to another island just a few miles away (where they meet another character). Throughout the story whenever the men are in desperate need for something or at their wits end the one thing they need mysteriously appears or is brought to their attention. They come to the conclusion that they are not alone on this island as they once thought. Eventually they are lead to their saving grace who just happens to be Captain Nemo from Jules Verne' book "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea".

I enjoyed this book and if you like the classics I'm sure you will enjoy it all. Just remember when reading it, that it is nothing like most of the films based off it.

  • I first read that book when I was 11 - it remains one of my favorites . . . of course, I'm a book geek, so don't let that influence you. Movies of all of them - 20,000 Leagues, The Time Machine . . . none of them compare with the rich description in the books.
