I wasn't sure what to expect from this book at first. I didn't really know the genre when I started reading. Right from the beginning, the mystery of the author character in the story pulls you in. The story keeps the reader enthralled with each new question that pops up. It's written in first person, so the reader only knows what the main character knows. Setterfield keeps the mystery fresh and really puts the reader into the story. The story is fresh, and keeps you reading to discover what was going on in the house with the little girls. The story is enthralling to the readers as they follow along with the main character and learn all the new twists and turns that she learns as the book goes on.

Most of the characters were very realistic. At some points the members of the family felt a bit surreal, but they were supposed to be a very disfunctional group of people. I'm not an expert, but at times, the characters in the family seemed less than human.
