In my entire life, there has only been one movie that I loved so much that I went back the next night to see it again. That movie is "Harold and Maude", a classic from 1971.
Harold (played brilliantlly by Bud Cort) is an eccentric 19-year-old rich kid with an obsession for death. His mother wants him to grow up and sets him up with several girls she deems suitable for him. Maude (played by the incomparable Ruth Gordon) is an 89-year-old woman with wise and inspired ways of looking at the world. The two meet at a funeral and the fun begins. Maude wants Harold to step out and live life. Harold finally finds someone he can relate to. This is an outrageous story of two odd people who find love. It's hilarious, bizarre and touching, all at the same time. It's best not to give more details as it would spoil the movie if you haven't seen it and want to.
This movie has gained the status as a cult classic. Critics hated it, but audiences loved it. It's unlike anything I have ever seen and to this day, is my favorite movie. Some people hate it, as happens with all movies. Those that love it, truly love it for the great writing and excellent performances of Bud Cort, Ruth Gordon and Vivian Pickles as Harold's mother.
The soundtrack is by Cat Stevens, another great feature of this movie. To me, this movie will never be outdated. It's one that will live on forever. Personally, I've seen it dozens of times and it never gets old.
