books producers review image

The original version of The Producers was filmed in 1968 and directed by Mel Brooks. It tells the story of a broadway producer, played by Zero Mostel, who hasn't had luck with his latest productions. So, during an audit by an accountant, played by Gene Wilder, he discovers that he can theoretically, but illegally, make more money by creating a flop than a hit.

This is a hilarious tale crafted by Brooks and since made into a musical and another major film. Zero Mostel does a great job playing a slimy, unethical producer and Wilder matches him with his neurosis as an accountant. I found the humor to be both high brow at times and low brow at others, so it can be enjoyed by many. My favorite part of the movie is when they are putting on the actual play, Springtime for Hitler, and perform the title song. It is full of all sorts of german stereotypes and taboos. It really is a funny movie for anyone with a good sense of humor.
