Books Movies & Music / Music CDs / A Genre Revived

With their debut, Revival, Gillian Welch and her partner and husband David Rawlings have created a great addition to the Americana genre. Her clear voice glides over every word and note, giving meaning to every one. Meanwhile, his guitar provides a great background for her lyrics and melodies. When in harmony, their voices combine to remember the old mountain gospel sound. While many of the songs (like "Orphan Girl" and "By The Marks") are more or less acoustic country tracks, others, like "Tear My Stillhouse Down" and "Pass You By" are searing electric numbers that sound like a cross between Neil Young and the Stanley Brothers. Which is definitely not a bad combination. All in all, a solid debut, and one that makes anyone excited for the next installment.
