Books Movies & Music / Non Fiction Books / Vocabulary Expansion: A Necessity

A highly developed vocabulary is a wonderful and necessary asset to all authors, journalists, poets, or  pretentious wannabes. All but the latter, however, have probably naturally augmented their fishing pond of words through studies and reading. But to those who wish an even sharper edge on the competition, I recommend the Sadlier-Oxford Vocabulary Workshop. This workbook is filled with almost 200 pages of obscure (but highly useable) words and retention practice. There are 15 units of twenty words each and five practice pages for each unit. The practice includes "completing the sentence," "synonyms," "antonyms, and "choosing the right word." Through this workbook, I have found myself as a walking thesaurus. In fact, I can credit many of my boosted essay grades to the Vocabulary Workshop. Unfortunately, though the book is truly useful, there is no better way to retain newfound words than simply utilizing them in conversation. The book's practice simply fails in comparison to natural learning.
