While I love my Tivo I absolutely hate the DVR that my cable company (Time Warner) supplies me with. While Tivo has a lot of bells and whistles the Scientific Atlantic DVR is very basic. The DVR will record what you tell it to (most of the time), you can pause live television, but the quality of the picture after where you have paused it is terrible.
There are is no alphabetic search available so you can really only record the programs that you find through the cable channel guide. I find this very frustration. You can set up this DVR to record a season full of any particular program. I found that to be the only positive.
I dislike the remote (too big and way to many buttons that do not function properly) and have found on many occasions that when you record a show what you are left with is a blank screen.
While a Tivo can be very expensive it is well worth it. I would advise anyone who is thinking about getting a DVR through their cable company to save their pennies and buy a Tivo instead.
Sounds like we are better off with older technology items. I don't even want to start a new electronic device set up!
Thanks for this info, my husband and I were just talking yesterday about switching from our dish to time warner cable and getting there DVR, this is good information to know now before we make the switch.
I hope you're able to get a Tivo instead, kiddo!
