Finances & Insurance / Auto Insurance / American Family is not part of my family

I have been with American Family for the last 4 years and at the beginning I really liked them. I had not had a single problem with them and would have reccommended them to anyone I knew. My husband and I moved to Portland, OR last June and changed our insurance brokers from Las Vegas (where we lived) to Portland. From the moment we did that we have had several problems. I am not sure whether its the insurance office or the comapny itself but I have a bad taste in my mouth because of the experiences we have had.

When we first got the insurance we were paying around $85 which included rental and auto insurance. When I changed the location offices to Portland, my insurance went up to $146. When I asked the broker why it went up she couldn't give me an explanation however she succesfully danced around the question. To this day I still don't know why it went up. About 3 months ago, we forgot to pay the insurance when it was due and while cleaning our house 2 days later found the bill. I called them up immidiatly and told them that I would pay the bill and gave them my credit card. They charged it and I even received the receipt in the mail a few days later. Within 3 days I received a cancelation bill and when I called the insurance broker, she said that payment was due and that I need to make payment. I told her that I had already made the payment and gave her the receipt number. She took the information and told me that would be fine. I later found out that the payment was never applied to my account and had to pay an additional month just to make sure they wouln't fully cancel me.

There have been several other instances in which I have had issues with American Family. We finally found another comapny and am very happy with them.

It sounds funny, but I would still reccomend them to people but only if your looking for cheap auto insurance. I have a lot of mixed feeling about them because I had some good experiences with them. I hope this review hasn't confused anyone as American Family is an ok company to go with, but if I were to reccomend an insurance company, it wouldn't be them.
