Jumping around is fun. Not in real life I guess, but in video games there's nothing better than being given an entire city to run, jump, and generally mess around in. This was always the secret of the Grand Theft Auto series; it wasn't the violence, but the total freedom the game provided that kept people coming back.
Assassin's Creed isn't as immersive or open as those games, but tries to make up for it with beautiful graphics and an engaging storyline. Oh, and the jumping. The jumping-climbing-killing mechanic in this game is a joy, and leaves you wishing you had more places and situations to explore it. Unfortunately you run up against the major flaw of this game. It's a great engine, a great environment, and yet there isn't that much to do. To call the game repetitive is kind. Aside from unique assassinations (which are essentially boss battles) , its the same thing over and over again.
The good news is that there will inevitably be a sequal which will hopefully address thses flaws. As it stands, Assassin's Creed is still a fun game, and definitely worth a rental if nothing else.
