Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare   Activision, Infinity Ward   After focusing on World War II for the past three games, Infinity Ward is finally moving into the world of modern combat with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. With all that's been going on in recent years, a first person shooter based in today's world holds much more interest.   Call of Duty 4 offers multiplayer FPS and a decent single-player campaign that offers plenty of challenges, but doesn't last long enough to provide total satisfaction to the serious gamer. Increasing the level of difficulty only makes the enemies almost unbeatable to the point of frustration.   The story is told from various points of view including a new British SAS operative and a US Marine. You'll end up on a boat in the process of sinking on a rainy night and a missile silo where your goal will be to save millions from a Chernobyol worst case scenario death. The plots will leave even Jerry Bruckheimer in awe.   The real challenge of the game, as well as the duration of play, comes from the multiplayer action/ Up to 18 players can get online into a match of one of 16 different maps with six game modes to choose from where you'll do everything from carry bombs to destroy enemy equipment to capturing control points.   The real advantage of this game over the past ones is more of a focus on skilled play with tactical moves. The air strike play is amazing, at one point allowing you to set a strike wherever you choose.    Overall, Call of Duty 4 is well worth purchasing and playing. It is on a par with the modern combat versions of the Battlefield series. Coupled with exceptional graphics and unexpected but awe-inspiring challenges the more you get into the game, COD4 is by far the best of the COD series and one of the best FPS games available now, with only the single player being somewhere disappointing because it doesn't last long enough.

  • My youngest son loves COD and has tested COD4. He feels pretty much what you do about the single player game, but overall finds it absorbing and extremely creative.
