Health / Muscle Pain Relievers / Cold therapy to soothe aching muscles

My massage therapist recommended Biofreeze to me back in 2002 when I was seeing her for muscle spasms in my upper back and neck. I’d had surgery and was flat on my back for several weeks post-operatively, and it did a number on my muscles. I liked it so much I’ve been using it ever since.

You can choose from different delivery methods such as a roll-on, a spray bottle, a pump or a tube that you squeeze the gel out of and then apply it with your hand. It is a greenish color and has a strong menthol smell to it.

When you put it on your sore muscles it feels really cool going on. After a minute or two it gets really cold and you can start to feel it working. The package says to wash your hands immediately after handling it, which is a good idea if you don’t want your hands to get cold and tingly as well!

Depending on how severe my pain is, I can put on one layer or several layers. I can also reapply it in a few hours if I’m still having pain or stiffness. I usually only use this when exercises or stretching haven’t worked and my muscles get so tight that I can’t do much with them. This definitely takes the edge off and allows me to get the tightness down to a manageable level. It’s hard to relax when you have tight muscles, but Biofreeze really helps to dull the pain and let me finish what I need to do.

The only thing I don't like is the fact that it's hard to put this on my back by myself. I need to invest in a spray bottle so I can use it if I'm home alone. Biofreeze is a relatively inexpensive way to help get over a painful muscle strain or spasm.
