My father and his father both died of heart attacks before the age of 50. When I was about 45 and my doctor said I had high cholesterol it definetly got my attention. My doctor perscribed Lipitor. Lipitor is made by Pfizer and aims at lowering bad cholesterol. Pfizer claims only " 20% of Cholesterol from what you eat and 80% comes from your body" ( bad genetics here). Pfizer also claims "clinical studies say lipitor lowers bad Cholesterol 39-60%". Both of these claims are well suported by years of independent research and studies. Lipitor is in a group of medicine called Statins. I have been working on the 20% by increasing fiber and reducing saturated Fats and percent of fats in my diet. Reguler exercise and weight reduction also helps lower bad cholesterol. Since I have been on Lipitor combined with Niaspan my Cholesterol levels have been great with no side effects. Serious side effects can impact kidney oand liver. Pregnant woman have extra side effects with Lipitor. People are differnt on what medicine work best for them and I would suggest your doctor should consider lipitor for high cholesterol but knows best what works for you.
