Household / Interior / Exterior Paint / Chalk Board Paint

When I was re-doing a room into a play room for my daughter I knew I wanted it to be a fun place where she would want to spend lots of time. I wanted to do something unique with the walls and remembered seeing chalk board paint on a few home improvement shows. I decided to just get a container of it and see what happened.

Right now my little girl is still too little to be able to draw on the wall, but I have a niece and nephew who had a blast drawing on it! At first I think they thought they were going to get in trouble if they actually drew on it, but after seeing me draw on it they jumped right in. Even my husband and I like to draw on the wall!

This paint goes on just like any other paint does, covers the same size area other paints do, and doesn't have any different of a smell. I'm actually still wondering what makes this paint so much different than normal black interior paint. One thing I was impressed with was the drying time. By the time I reached the end of the wall I was painting, the side I started on was already dry to the touch. It had only been about 10 minutes! I still waited about an hour before I put the second coat on though.

I thought this paint was going to act just like a chalk board when it came to erasing, but it really isn't. First of all, I could not find a chalk eraser at ANY store! No one carries them anymore since even schools switched to using dry erase boards. Those erasers DO NOT work on chalk. I took a dry towel and tried to erase the chalk, but that did not work either. I ended up having to use a very wet towel to get the wall clean.

I'm really glad I ended up using this chalk board paint in the play room. I think it will be a hit with everyone, including adults, when kids are playing in there.

  • That's so cool! I have seen chalkboard-type stick-ons for walls and always wanted to try them. I mean, "for the kids" (that I don't have yet, lol) :)
