Household / Small Appliances / Can I Brew You A Fresh Cup?

review brew ceramic image review ceramic mounted image mounted brew a image

This is my Dutch ceramic coffee grinder that I purchased on a trip to Holland about 35 years ago.  I can remember growing up my grandmother had one of these and as kids we were always competing to see who she would ask to grind the coffee when we came over to visit.

Flash forward and it was my 2 daughters who would beg to be able to stand on a chair and grind away the coffee beans for our morning pot of coffee.

It's a lovely addition to our kitchen, is still in great working condition and continues to be used on Sunday mornings by my husband and I when we are relaxing in our recliners, reading the paper and drinking our own freshly ground blend of coffee.

This coffee grinder measures 15-1/2" high, 5-1/4" wide and 6" deep.  The coffee grinder itself is mounted on a wooden base which is bolted to the wall with 4 screws in each corner.  The ceramic body of the grinder is painted with a blue delft windmill scene and has a round wooden top.

The grinder itself is the metal portion just below the ceramic body and as we hand crank the coffee beans through the grinder with its old creaky sounds from years of use, the ground coffee falls into the glass cup below it.

I like buying different blends of coffee beans and coming up with our own unique flavors of coffee.  It would be easy to run to Starbucks, but this is just a tradition we grew up with.

Cleaning the inside of the ceramic body is done with a damp cloth and letting it air out.  The removable cup can be hand washed.  Cleaning the grinding mechanism is done by running through a handful of uncooked rice to remove any leftover grounds and the oils from the beans.

If you are into nostalgia and would like a hand cranked coffee grinder, I would recommend this one for the many years of trouble free use it has given us.  You'll love the fresh brewed coffee too!

  • Wow, you actually use it. I'd be afraid to wreck it. Beautiful of course, even looks outstanding here in the land of blue delft everything.

  • This is really nice! Thanks for sharing with us - using it every Sunday is a real testament to it's excellent manufacturing - doubt any of my coffee grinders will still be functioning 35 years from now - ;) very nice!
