Blinds of Wood - Well, Almost

I was doing over the living room and wanted something for the windows so off to Home Depot we went.

At first I wasn’t looking for blinds. I didn’t really care for blinds and thought of them as just another thing to dust. Then, I saw these!

These blinds are not the skinny, thin plasticy…. Well, OK, technically they are plastic… but they are plastic that is molded to look like wood! The slats are each 2 inches wide and are relatively thick. Each slat has a wood grain look to them. If you look closely at the picture of the single slat you may be able to see the grain. You should also see that the cords running through the slats are nice and thick.

I picked up 2 of the natural wood colored blinds for the living room (the ones pictured with my poor, thirsty spider plant) and a set of white ones for the kitchen door.

Putting the blinds up takes a bit more than putting up the regular type of blinds because these babies are HEAVY! All of the hardware that is needed is included, but an extra pair of hands would be most helpful due to the weight of the blinds.

They look absolutely beautiful! The fit in with the décor of the home and are very sturdy. I have had these blinds for at least 6 years and have had no problems with them (unless you count the time that the squirrel broke in… but no where have I ever seen a blind that was made to stand up to squirrel teeth! Even so the squirrel only broke a cord.)

These blinds do not seem to be dust catchers. The white ones do sometimes get smudges on them since they are in a high traffic area. A cloth dampened with plain water quickly does the trick.

How easy is that?!

The only thing that I really don’t like is that I needed to trim the set that I hung up on the door and the ends just don’t look neat enough for me. Because the door opening and closing causes the blinds to swing the snipped ends work their way to the edge of the bottom slat. There really doesn’t seem to be a way to secure the ends better without it showing so every once in a while I need to re-wrap them under the bottom slat.
