1776 by David McCullough is a masterpiece. McCullough has authored many other books and was the recipient of the Nobel Prize. 1776 reiterates the major events occuring in the British American Colonies in the year 1776. General George Washington is the central character. The hardships endured by the Colonial Army are described with impeccable imagery. McCullough has a gift. He literally takes you to the times he tells about. I found myself submerged and felt as though I was identifying with the ranks; I could nearly smell the filth when he described the conditions in the Army's camps. This is an incredible story about an incredible man who, against all odds and with a meager broken army, changed the face of history forever. I've read more of McCullough's works. Each time I've been equally satisfied.
