The boys at Williams street unleashed an amazing show upon us last year. A show that combines the awesomeness of Metal music along with the comedy that the creators of Home Movies have made us all laugh with. Folks, the Metalocalypse has begun!
The first thing I try to do when it comes to any review is to start with the bulk and price quotient(fancy way of me to say: Do you really get what you pay for?). This DVD is 20 episodes on 2 Disks, for a price of $25. At first when you think about it, that’s a little over a dollar an episode, which sounds fair, but when you take into account that each episode is only 15 minutes long, that’s basically saying you’re paying a little over a dollar for half of a normal full length episode on TV. So price wise, it’s decent. Personally, I find the 15 minute episodes to be more filling than most 30 minute comedies out there, so I believe the price is fair. But some of you out there may disagree, so I guess it really depends how much you like the episodes.
The quality of the episodes hasn’t been really been upgraded from that of their TV counter parts. It all plays about the same as if you were watching it straight off the TV. The only difference I really noticed was the fact the sound seems to be improved thanks to my DVD player. So the thrashing awesome metal hits the show cranks out are amplified and sound amazing on my sound system, something my satellite couldn’t really do for me.
For the special features DVD, I find all of the Adult Swim season boxsets come with plenty of special features to make up for that 15 minutes you lost with the episodes. Metalocalypse does not break this method and offer plenty of awesome things. The special features on the DVD are hilarious, but I have one complaint, they are HIDDEN. Not well hidden mind you, just hit the arrows on your DVD remote and you’ll find them really simply, but it would have been much more convenient to put them on the second disk like most boxsets do for your viewing pleasure, but instead you have to go Easter egg hunting. In the words of Nathan Explosion: “That’s Brutal”. Either than that, the new band interviews are hilarious, filled with awesome one liners that no one will know unless they see the DVD.
But it does seem odd that in the interviews the members of Dethklok can drop the F bombs freely, but in the show they continue to censor them out. The DVD brags on being the uncensored set, but in all honesty, the same bleeps and guitar hits are there to take out the language. It’s not really a big deal, but it’s a problem I have with most of the Adult Swim DVD’s. If they are going to brag they are uncut, they might as well actually make them uncut and get on with it.
The Metalocalypse DVD is definitely worth it’s price tag. The special features and episodes themselves are enjoyable and re-playable for hours and hours. This 2 disk set will have you laughing on end non stop. Once the episodes are finished, find the special features and continue the laughter. A great boxset for a great show!
