AristoCats (1970)

Share and Enjoy:

Duchess is a very refined mother-cat who lives with her three kittens at the house of a wealthy old lady, Madame Adelaide Bonfamille. The cats live like aristocracy, enjoying the love of their mistress and the service of her butler, Edgar. Duchess teaches her kittens music, drawing, and good manners. This peaceful life is interrupted very abruptly when Edgar overhears Madame Adelaide talking to her lawyer and finds out that she leaves her fortune to the cats - not him. Edgar gets angry and decides to get rid of the cats so that he can claim the inheritance. He adds sedative to the milk he gives to Duchess and her kittens, and when they are asleep he takes them to the countryside and leaves them there. The family of AristoCats wakes up to a completely different life. Thankfully, they soon meet and befriend Thomas O'Malley, the alley cat who helps them to survive in the wild and find their way back home.

I saw a review of this film commenting that it has a "dated feel" - I disagree, unless what the reviewer means is the absence of gross scenes and/or potty humor. To me, this animated movie is a timeless classic, clean, funny, and kind, with good music and memorable characters. Duchess is a true lady, her kittens are cute as buttons, and Thomas the alley cat steals the movie when he shows up.
