An inspirational classic

Share and Enjoy:

This is my all-time favorite book. It tells the story of young Francie Nolan, who grows up in a poor family at the turn of the century and overcomes adversity to achieve her dream of becoming a writer. Even though she doesn't have an easy lot in life, Francie refuses to give up.

The title refers to the fact that a tree can grow against all odds in a tiny sidewalk crack in the middle of the city. And the book shows how you can get through any obstacle as long as you keep your focus and have the suppport of people around you, whether you think you do or not.

This book is over 50 years old, but it reads just as well today as it always did. It has been marketed mostly as a children's book, but I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone, especially those with big dreams.

When, I read it, I kind of felt like it was speaking to me, which I know is silly. But, I love reading books about life in previous eras that can relate to modern times. The family goes through hard times, but they still maintain a great dynamic. I really love the part where Francie's mother never gives up on her, even when she disappoints her. She only has money to send one child to college and she sends Francie's brother because she knows Francie will find a way to make it on her own while her brother probably won't.

It reminds me that some of the hardest decisions in life end up being the right ones.
