Across the Universe is EXCELLENT!

We recently rented Across the Universe, which was released in theaters in 2007.  It was directed by Julie Taymor and stars Evan Rachel Wood, Jim Sturgess, and Joe Anderson.  It is a brilliant musical which tells a love story taking place in the turbulent 1960's America through the songs of the Beatles.  Whether you are a Beatles fan or not, the music is familiar and takes you to a time and place in the not too distant past. 

Beyond the music, this film is extremely artistic without being annoying, at least in my opinion.  It has enough of a story to keep someone interested.  It has wonderful music and great performances for those drawn by the Beatles factor.  It depicts events occurring in America during the 1960's for those nostalgic or interested in that era.  And it is full of vibrant colors and psychedelic sequences for those just looking for something different. 

I was surprised by how well the actors performed the music of the Beatles.  No one can top the Beatles, but I was not disappointed by the genuine performances included on the soundtrack.  The songs conveyed the emotions of the story for each scene they were used in.  There were a few cameos included that made their mark on the film as well:  Joe Cocker singing "Come Together" as a homeless man, Bono singing "I am the Walrus" as Dr. Robert, and Eddie Izzard as Mr. Kite for "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite."

I did not know what to expect when picking up this DVD.  I had not heard much about it but was intrigued by the commercials and the Beatles soundtrack.  What a pleasant surprise!  It might be my new favorite movie.
