Mt. Rushmore National Monument

This is a review of Mt. Rushmore National Monument in South Dakota.  Admission to the monument is free however, there is an eight dollar parking charge that gives you a pass that is valid for 1 year.  The monument also has wands you can rent for a $5 fee.  These wands correspond to different areas around the monument and give you insite into the thoughts leading up to the sculpture, what happened during the sculpting and the history of the monument.  I highly recommend renting a want for each member of your party.  They are very informative.  Once you are inside the monument you go through the area with all the state flags.  They are in alphabetical order.  When you are walking up to them they frame the monument.  There is a very nice interactive museum to explain how each president was choosen and how the sculpture was made.  You can walk around the monument and get different views, sometimes only being able to see one of the presidents.  Near the end there is a sculpture studio.  There is a plaster replica of Mt. Rushmore there and an park official explains how the monument was made to scale.  Going into detail about the problems that occured with each president, Washington, Roosevelt, Jefferson and Lincoln.  It can be very difficult to find hotels much closer than Rapid City during the summer.  There is a cafeteria at the monument, with fairly reasonably priced food that is OK, but not great.  There is also several gift store opportunities to purchase books, for children or adults, as well as typical souvineers of the monument.

  1. I visited Mt. Rushmore in 1998. All I can say is---when I looked up and saw it--it was fantastic. I remember reading about it in school & seeing pictures but there is nothing like it:; to actually see it in person. A must see!
