A Safer Way To Fertilize Your Garden

Share and Enjoy:

I love Spring and I'm already picking out my tomatoes and other garden goodies right now! One staplew in my garden year after year is Alaska Brand Fish Emulsion. Why? Because I won't use chemical feeds or pesticides in my garden. Besides which all most chemical fertilizer induce a high nitrogen "rush" to your plants. Akin to getting your garden hooked on meth.

This rush makes roses and other plants very vulnerable to pests like aphids. The nitrogen creates a big reservoir of honeydew in the plants. Aphids and ants interact over this compound and swarm the plant in an effort to fill up.

In contrast an good organic fertilizer creates a slow, steady and safe rise in nitrogen, along with other micronutrients critical to plant health.

Chemical fertilizers can burn your plants or create scalding. Organics rarely if ever do. And fish emulsion is among the safest you can use. It stinks, but that evaporates in a few quick minutes after application. I dilute mine, one glop in a gallon of tepid water, which I pour in the early morning over the entire plant.

I follow a once a week feed with my fish emulsion during the entire season. The only other product I use is HB 101. With just these two organic fertilizers, I  feed a huge garden of 26 rose bushes and produce about 40 pounds of beefsteak tomatoes per season.

  3. Organic is clearly the way to go, good for you and not using harsh chemicals. I had to laugh at picturing your garded addicted to crystal meth though!

  4. We garden organically too, but I've never tried fish emulsion, though I've heard great things about it. Maybe this year I'll get some.
