When I first started reading Last Days of Summer by Steve Kluger I wasn't that interested in it, but once you get going its quite an enjoyable story. I am not usually a big fan of baseball books but I thought the layout of the book was interesting. The story is told through a series of letters, notes, report cards and newspaper clippings which makes for a quick read. The basic story is about a lonely 12 year old Jewish boy named Joey Margolis. He lives in Brooklyn during WWII and becomes friends with a fowl mouthed baseball player named Charles Banks. It tells the story of their friendship and how they became family to one another. The author captures the true essence of each character with the language he uses. This book has made me both laugh and cry. If your looking for a book you can read in only a few hours this is it. Enjoy.
