I love a cool green weed free lawn. It's a refreshing sight on a warm spring night. Unfortunately we don't get these turf quality lawns easily, and weeding is a major pain. Here in Sacramento, weeds like crabgrass, spurge and bent grass overtake neighborhood lawns very quickly.
I was getting totally frustrated with trying to both feed my lawn to help it maintain its deep green color and get rid of the ever present weed problem. Two years ago, while in Emigh, I asked the nurseryman for advice on how best to deal with both problems. After discussing the pro's and cons of the products available, I settled on Scott's Weed N Feed Turf Builder 2x2. Though taken aback by the hefty price, I was reassured by the 100% guarantee that came with it.
My nursery guy recommended I mow my lawn and water it thoroughly the day before application. Which I did. The following morning I applied the Weed N Feed according to the directions, using my spreader. One warning: Do NOT use this product without a spreader. Hand casting will result in burning and scarring of your lawns.
Within one week, I was starting to see a much deeper richer color and a noticeable reduction in weeds. WOW! Since this was very early Spring, 5 weeks later, I reapplied Weed N feed a second time. The results were simply amazing. I went from a paler weedier lawn to a golf course quality weed free area. I can honestly recommend this product because it works just exactly as it says it will.
Now I routinely do my Weed N Feed in early Spring to get my lawn ready for summers heat. A 20 pound bag should last you through at least two Springs, if you have the average suburban lawn. You need to apply it as soon as temperatures rise above 49 degrees at night, and before daytime temps reach the high 70's for it to be truly effective.
We just moved into a new house and I am pondering what to do with the lawn because it has some weed issues. This is expensive, but it sounds like it really lasts. I think I will go out to home depot or lowes and get some. It averages to $10 a year for a "Golf course quality" lawn so I think that is a bargain!
Wow...great results! We have tons of wild onions, crab grass and sand spurs this spring...that is just what I need:0)
Ive seen this in the store and wondered how it worked. My husband has been using something in a spray bottle that attaches to the hose and it's just not cutting it. Our only problem is we do not have a spreader. I wonder if the neighbors have one we could borrow.
My hubby used this on our yard last year, and he's planning on using it on our new yard this year. It really is a great product! And you're right about the spreader tip! ;-)
I need some of this soon! It's just getting to be warm enough and soon I will see the weeds jumping higher than my grass. I have about one acre of back yard and it can get out of hand. I really want to thank you for telling us to use the spreader and not our hands. This is such an important detail that might just undo the good you are trying to achieve. Great information.
Need to check this out. I was thinking of going with a lawn service but they are so expensive. This sounds simple to use, I think even I could do it! Thanks for the great information.
HaHa... If we used this we'd have no lawn at all, but if you have actual grass it's good to know this works so well!
Thanks for sharing all the detailed information. This certainly sounds like it would really help our lawn. This information was very helpful.
I've seen commercials for Scot's and wondered if it was really good - now I know! I'm glad it worked for you so I'm going to give it a try. Even at $21 a bag it is still cheaper than hiring The Weed Man. I am going to buy this from RONA.
Sounds like a great product! For us to get those warm temperatures needed it would be June though! Glad it works like it says it does.
You know that burning and scarring you talked about? That would be me... Weed and Feed is so great in that it kills weeds, yet brings your grass back to life! Such an enigma!
Great results for your lawn. I don't have a yard, but the products sounds like it's worth the money.
This sounds like a great product. I always hate seeing the little weeds pop up on my lawn.
ohh, this is good to know. I will let my hubby know!! Thanks for the info!
Hmmm, looks like we missed our "before temps reach the 70's" window, but I will have to remember this for next year, our lawn could use the help!
This product did very well in killing most of my weeds, but it also burrn my grass. It is a good product, you just have to really follow the directions carefully to avoid burning the grass.
