We managed to get son number two into a mobile home. It’s not great, (if you look at it with objective eyes) but it’s better than where he was living and he can afford it. Then we found out that hardly anyone will insure older mobile homes.
Enter Foremost Insurance. We were able to get $10K coverage on the trailer, $10K on a comparatively nice garage on the property, $5K on the contents, and $100K liability on the property for $250 a year.
This has a $500 deductible.
We have not had to process any kind of claim yet, so I don’t know anything about how smoothly this would go (although I had to put a number in the claim process rating box), but I do have this coverage through a local agent, and I tend to think that this always is a positive factor if you do have troubles of some kind.
I don’t think that Foremost has their own offices. The office that carries it locally is a Farm Bureau Insurance office. The agent just also offers this service. Considering how many old trailers there are sprinkled around the countryside here, I was really surprised at how hard it was to find any service that would insure one.
They do have a web site www.foremost.com where you can find local agents. They claim to be “the nation's leading specialty insurer.” The web site says that they insure everything from snowmobiles and boats, to collectible autos, mobile homes and more.

I had to update the cost. Somehow I forgot that there are two payments a year, so the cost is $500/ year, not $250 as it states in the review. It's still a great deal.

Sharkey, thank you for sharing what many folks will see as extremely valuable information on specialty insurance like this. It can potentially save someone with an older outdated or unusual housing loss and heartache. I'm not certain if Chubb offers this type of insurance, but they might.
It sounds like you got a great rate for the amount of insurance coverage that you got. Let's hope that if he ever does have a claim that it all goes smoothly. My father lives in an older mobile home in Florida and I am going to pass this information on to him to see if he can use it, thanks.
Very interesting information. I did not know this company existed, but it is good know it does. Thanks for sharing these details. They could prove valuable in the future.
Are mobile homes hard to insure? I had no idea about this. I think it sounds like a good rate for the year. He's lucky to have someone to look into things like this for him. Must be a good son!
Like the others said, I never realized that older mobile homes were harder to insure. We have lived in some, and one was 2 years old, but we never had an issue with insurance. It seems like a great insurance company though. That is a great price, (from the little I know about other insurances lol). Glad he was able to get a good place!
We had an old mobile home when we got married, but I can't remember who we were insured with. This is great information for someone that might be having the same problem your son had finding insurance.
Foremost has been insuring mobile homes for many, many years. There were a lot of changes in the laws governing mobile home manufactoring in the 1980's or so and the ones that are being manufactored today are built much better than they used to be with more saftely features like window size requirements and smoke alarms. This is why older mobile homes may be harder to find insurance for. At any rate. Foremost is very well known for insuring mobile homes.

I had no idea it would be hard to find insurance on an older mobile home. Glad you finally found a solution.
Informative and well written. thanks for sharing.
First of all, I'm surprised that hardly anyone insures older mobile homes! Secondly, I think you're a great mom to have helped your son get this!

This is funny... I never knew there was separate insurance for mobile homes! lol!
