Ever Start Maxx Battery - Recommended, Seems Good
Share and Enjoy:
Surprisingly enough I have an auto mechanic that I trust. When I needed a new battery this winter he said that the best one for my car was the Wal-Mart Ever Start Maxx.
I had not ever had any work done at the Wal-Mart Auto Shop, but since the price for the battery was based on turning in your old battery core, and the installation was supposedly free, I decided to let them do it. Otherwise I would have had to borrow my husband’s car to take my old battery in and bring the new one home. That just wasn’t convenient at the time.
This is not a review of the service I received at that location or the rating would not be great. There turned out to be a $9 charge that I don’t know yet exactly what it was for since the installation was supposed to be free. The mechanic was rude to the point where I had to call a manager to straighten out a problem with an automatic security system feature that he couldn’t figure out how to shut off. I was at the service center for an hour and a half dealing with this. The installation was done carelessly. I had to loosen the bolts and change the angles at which the wires were feeding to the top of the battery when I got home. I ended up sincerely wishing that I had arranged to do the swap myself.
Nevertheless, the battery was finally replaced, and it is performing well. There is an ongoing starting problem with my car that no one has been able to diagnose. Every so often it won’t start at all, for no apparent reason. The first step in that diagnosis was this battery replacement, because the old one was clearly, well, old. Each time the problem happened I would have to jump start the car. So the new battery has had a few tests in its life to date (about 2 months). Several times since the replacement the car would not start. I would try it about ten times and then give up, and we would scramble to make it possible for me to take the other car to work. However, the difference with the new battery is that the next time (always a number of hours later) that I would try the car again it would start right up. The battery is plenty powerful, and not depleted by the multiple starting attempts.
The intermittent starting problem still isn’t fixed, despite replacing a few other parts, but that’s not the point of this review either!
So, the battery seems to be performing well. It has a two year free replacement warranty. It has a plastic carrying handle across the top which makes it neater and easier than some batteries to move around.
I have no idea what the required rating category “Type” refers to for a battery, so I gave it a 3, everything except the Wal-Mart service seems to be good for this battery. I would have to wait five years to know if it is really an outstandingly good battery, so I rated it at 4.8.

This battery has continued to perform very well. I didn't have any starting problems with it over the winter.

PS- the other problem with the starting was fixed- turned out to be faulty wires that the manufacturer replaced.

Sharkey, I wonder if you have a slight short in your ignition/firing system? It sounds like a possibility given you have a good working battery installed. I have friends who've bought this battery and are well pleased with its performance. Too bad the service aspect stank.
They've tested all the obvious stuff, and we are all pretty much scratching our heads. It's going to need to get worse and more consistent before we can figure it out, I fear. Thanks for the suggestion, though.
This sounds like my car! Or should I say the giant paperweight in the driveway... I cannot tell you how many times I have brought it in... and when I called the roadside assistance only to have it start up for them... It's horrible... So now it just sits. I hope that yours gets figured out! If it does, please PM me the problem! Thanks.
Gosh-I second & third the sentiments here as well-I hope that the problem will be figured out . I don't think I've seen a battery with a carrying handle-that's a great idea!
Sorry to hear about your car and service problems. But for the price of the battery it seems like a good deal.
Hopefully I will again be a car owner in June for the first time since 2000 so I will remember this next time I need a battery.
So glad to hear at least the battery is high quality, because it sure seems like the service you received at Walmart was not! So sorry you had to go through all the trouble to get a good battery!
These are good batteries, thank you for sharing the information.
Good Grief! I'm glad the battery turned out to be worth all that aggravation.
I'm glad that the battery seems to be working well after all that you went thru. I too would not have paid the $9 charge unless they could tell me exactly what it was for. If the installation was free, there shouldn't have been another charge.
Glad to know you found something good that works at a store I spend most of my money at...will have to try this battery next time I need one. Your right though...usually the service at the Walmart auto shop is crappy
I had a battery problem on and off for 3 years with one car - I was so glad when we traded it in!
Sorry to hear you got such bad service - but I'm glad the battery is working well for you. I had no idea Walmart even sold car batteries! :o) Seems like you got it for a good price too.
A mechanic you can trust seems to be a rare commodity these days! If my Sears Die-Hard ever dies... I'll be checking this battery out! Thanks for the info!
Glad the battery is working well, too bad about your car deciding to not work occasionally. And the walmart service - well....it's walmart, can't say much more than that! ;)
Actually, I would have to say that that battery is closer to a three(less cranking amps than a die hard). The wal-mart service is Good-or Bad..depending on what state you are in. Ours are pretty dependable(tires, wipers, etc) and i usually count on them. But as for that battery, I hope it lasts you through the COLD winter. If not, Les Swabb has the best!
Another thing...sometimes we just need to tighten our alternator belts and clean the main Block ground to keep it starting properly. You should do this every six months. Hope that helps.
The $9 charge is a core charge for the old battery. Since you provided one at installation/purchase time, they should not have charged you. I just got one yesterday, and didn't pay any extra when I provided the old battery. BTW, I paid about $77 in Portland, OR for the 108 month battery with 3 year exchange.
One thing to check is that the hood is not resting on the positive cable becuz that will discharge the battery. If it is a side mount battery then no problem but the top mount batteries have to be protected from grounding out the positive post. that is what I found with mine.
sounds like a good battery
