Farm truck lived a good life

Share and Enjoy:

Like a rock!  I know that is the Chevrolet slogan, but this GM family member is all that and a bag of chips.  The 1978 ¾ ton single-cab long bed GMC Sierra with a 454 V8 and I believe 3.83 rear-end make for a load pulling fast moving vehicle.  (Think of Rizzo from M*A*S*H saying "Veeeehicle").  My family purchased this truck in 1980 and it quickly became a workhorse on the ranch.

Today Chevrolets and GMCs are close to identical with the exclusion of their luxury packages, grills, and other exterior trim details.  This wasn't the case in around 78.  The drive train on the ¾ ton GMC is the same as the 1 ton Chevy trucks.

Gas mileage:  Here is the good news, it doesn't go down too much when you are pulling a load or in city traffic (I don't know why you would ever consider driving this into the city).  The bad news is on its best day it only gets 7mpg.  No I didn't leave out a digit SEVEN MPG.   OUCH!!!

This truck has outlived its life for benefit of anyone on the market, but it has served its purpose well.

My rating was for when it was new and not how it would be on today's market.

  1. I just love those old trucks that have done a hard decade or two of work and lived to tell!

  2. I love these work trucks! My husband had one out at his father's property and kept the thing going for some 20 odd years. It hauled brush, pulled stumps, herded cattle and so much more.

  3. They don't build work horses like this any more! Yikes on the gas mileage!

  4. 7 mpg is a huge ouch these days!!! But seriously, the overall build of the older vehicles is sooo long gone... a wind blown shopping cart would never be able to crinkle up a door to the point of it not being able to open the way I saw it do to a newer vehicle.

  5. Yes that is what mine was getting. I sold it a couple of weeks ago, after I painted it and all, but tough times...so I sacrificed that old Ford. Those 70's trucks were the best, even Chevy! I miss it:)

  6. There is nothing more reliable than a solid built truck that was made years ago!

  9. My dad has an old GMC that he drives around the farm. It does not get the greatest gas mileage but for an older truck it serves him well.

  10. I love cars and trucks that last forever. I'm another one who drives them until they're dead, so resale value isn't much of a concern to me.
