Affordable Life Insurance for a Pilot

When we moved into our new house, we decided to buy life insurance policies for each of us.  Our plan was to have enough insurance to pay off our mortgage in case one of us met with an untimely death.  We didn't have any problem getting insured, except the policy wouldn't cover my husband if he died while flying a helicopter.  You might say, "So what?  How many people are going to die that way anyhow?"  Well, my husband's job is a helicopter pilot, so you can see where this could be a problem.

I checked with other insurers, and they had policies that would cover him in case of a helicopter accident, but the premium was outrageous! Having just purchased a new house, we couldn't afford that kind of insurance payment.   When we lived in our other house, we carried mortgage insurance through Minnesota Life Insurance, and one day I received some "junk mail" from them.  It turns out it was a solicitation for us to reconnect with them for insurance coverage.  I called them right away to ask if their insurance would cover a helicopter pilot dying in a crash.  Much to my surprise, the answer was, "Yes", as long as it wasn't a military aircraft!  Then I waited for the premium quote... I held my breath... and the agent told me it would cost 37.50 three time a year!  Sign me up!  Or I should say, sign HIM up!

That was 10 years ago, and thank goodness, we've never had to find out if the company is easy to deal with upon an untimely death.  We've never had any problems with customer service, and when I called to have a duplicate policy sent out, it was mailed promptly.

I know talking about life insurance is a sensitive topic, but as with Wills, it must be considered.  Just knowing that each of us will have some financial security if one of us is left alone, brings a small amount of peace.
