Over the years whenever my husband and I want a little quiet get away weekend we head to Middlebury, Indiana and the Das Dutchman Essenhaus Inn. This hotel is situated in the middle of northern Indiana Amish country, less than a 2 hour drive from our house.
When we started coming here the Inn only had 33 rooms, it has now been expanded to 89. We always stay in the same one room suite situated in a quiet corner on the 2nd floor. Our "special" room has 2 queen sized four poster beds covered with real handmade Amish quilts. There is a tiny kitchenette that is screened off with a beautifully painted room divider.
In the center of the suite there is a table with 4 chairs, then a sitting area with a couch, chair, coffee table and a writing desk. The TV is situated in the middle of the room and swivels so you can watch it from the beds or the sitting area. At the back of the room is the bathroom with a wonderful jacuzzi tub the first place I head to!
There is the famous Essenhaus Inn restaurant with the all you can eat chicken dinners right across the parking lot. This is Indiana's largest restaurant and well worth just the trip alone. Shops and walking paths surround the Inn. The entire area is alcohol free plus the restaurant and Inn are smoke-free.
Continental breakfast is included with your room stay unless you want to head over to the restaurant for the best all you can eat breakfast anywhere. There are special packages throughout the year but we love it best during the holidays. Summertime is the busiest as there is the famous Shipshewana Flea Market every Tuesday and Wednesday.
We have never had a bad experience here, the rooms are always immaculate and the entire property is well maintained and beautiful.
As we head home on Sunday it is so peaceful driving through the countryside. You can find the Amish gathered for their Sunday worship, the kids playing outside, the buggies and horses lined up as far as the eye can see.

I live about 20 minutes from the biggest Amish settlement in the U.S. We have a Das Dutchman Essenhaus restaurant near there. I love eating the home cooked Amish food! This sounds like a wonderful hotel to stay at. Thank you for sharing!
I've heard many good things about this place. I really should try to check it out since it's not that far away from where I live. It sounds very peaceful and relaxing. My hubby would love the all you can eat chicken dinner!
