This is definitely an outdoor activity for young children but, it's a great way to work up an appetite for ice cream & for kids to see how ice cream is made. My Mom says that when she was young they never had such fancy things & used old coffee cans, now that we're out of the prehistoric times =) we use the ice cream ball. Simply put the heavy cream, sugar, & vanilla in & screw it tight. Then on the other end put the ice & salt & roll around. The directions say to open & mix half-way but, I think it should be mixed at least 3 times or more. Also more ice & salt should be added that what is recommended depending on the temperature in your area. Doing this in Hawaii, we needed to double up on the ice. It is a bit messy when you open & mix but, well worth the taste. Also use a heavy spatula to scrap the sides. The ball gets really heavy when filled so we rolled it to each other, not toss otherwise little toes could get badly hurt. This quart size made enough for 6-8 people.
I've seen these in the catalog and wondered if they worked well or not. Can you add other stuff in as well (like strawberries, peaches, etc) or is it only vanilla?
Yes, I forgot to mention it comes with a instructional recipe booklet. There are recipes in there for all kinds of flavors & you can add whatever fruit or flavorings to your desire. We added Oreo's to make cookies & cream, it came out quite good.
