GE Universal Remote

Share and Enjoy:

I have had the best RCA tv/VCR combo for about 14 years now. One of the first purchases I made when I got my first job as a teenager. The tv has held up well, I've had no problems with it whatsoever. I can't say the same for the remote that came with it. It gave it a good shot but over the last couple of years certain features on the remote have just stopped working and others you have to press the buttons so hard it hurts your fingers. I've been putting off getting a new remote, electronics are low on my list of priorities. If I can still turn the tv on and off and change the channels I'm pretty happy. I just didn't want to put the money out for a new one even though I did miss some of the features that were no longer working.

My fiance and I were at Walmart last night, we didn't go with the intention of getting a remote. In fact we didn't go anywhere near the electronics department. We got the items we came for and went to the check out. I get bored in Walmart lines, they are always so long. So I started looking at the magazine covers and the little items they have for sale up front. I saw the GE Universal Remote hanging there and the price above it was just 4.98! At first I was like there is no way that thing will work for that price. Then I thought, well, if it does work I just got a new remote for less than five bucks and if it doesn't I'll just return it. I really didn't have anything to lose so I got it.

I put the 2 triple A batteries that it takes (does not come with them) inside and read through the instruction manual. This remote has codes for 350+ brands and operates up to three items, TV, cable/satellite or VCR/DVD player. Even though I have cable I don't have a box that requires a seperate remote and my VCR is also operated by the TV so I only needed to set up one thing. It was so easy though! The codes are only seperated by brand, not by individual models within the brand so if you elect to program manually you have to go through each code for your brand until you find one that works. I don't know why anyone would do that though because the remote will search for the right code automatically with a few simple steps.

I selected the automatic search option and in seconds the remote was programmed for my tv and everything worked perfectly! I am so happy that I gave this inexpensive remote a chance.

  1. Some good things happen at the most unexpected places and with unexpected things. Good you've given it a try. :-)
