Zofran/Ondansetron - Anti-Nausea

Share and Enjoy:

My doctor prescribed me the drug Zofran because I was pregnant and having morning (day, and night) sickness and was losing weight at each visit.  I was 19 weeks pregnant when it was prescribed.

Zofran is usually prescribed to cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.  It "blocks the actions of chemicals in the body that can trigger nausea and vomiting."  It is prescribed to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by surgery and/or chemotherapy treatment.  Also, in some cases, like mine, it is prescribed to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by pregnancy.

The pill I was prescribed was very easy to take.  You simply popped it out of the packet and put in on your tongue to dissolve it.  You are instructed to drink a glass of water after it dissolves.

The zofran really worked in helping stop my nausea and vomiting.  I was very impressed and thought I had found the miracle drug.  Then I tried using the washroom.

Unfortunately one of the side effects of Zofran is constipation.  And I was hit with a severe case of it.  At one point I was in so much pain, I thought I was going to have to go to the emergency room.  Thankfully OTC suppositories helped.

I decided to continue taking the Zofran but I upped my fiber intake, took fiber caplets and started taking OTC stool softeners.  Unfortunately those didn't help relieve the constipation symptoms.  I ultimately decided that the side effects were much worse than the nausea and vomiting and I stopped taking the Zofran.

I am now 27 weeks pregnant and still experiencing nausea and vomiting.  Thankfully though it has eased up a bit and I am no longer losing weight.

Overall, I would recommend that pregnant women suffering from nausea and vomiting give Zofran a try. I think I just had an extreme reaction to it.  I would also recommend that a stool softener is taking along with it though.
