Treasure From the Good Ole Days

Share and Enjoy:

This is a scooper, people used to get a drink of well water out the bucket, back in the day.  It has been in my family for a long time.

I am not old enough to experience the well and the bucket.  But, when I was little, all I wanted to do is stay at my Granny's and Papa's house.

I have a brother and two cousins, whom I was raised with.  We all would meet at  that house and play all the games little kid play, like hiding go seek, or chase.  We would see who could hold on to the spool the longest, while rolling it down the hill.

We were not like kids now, (like my kid), that stay inside under my booty all the time.  If we wanted to come in, during the day, it was to go to the bathroom, get something to eat, get something to drink, or set down and be still.

When we would come in, to get a drink of water, we would use the scooper.   It  was always hanging on the wall, by the sink.  That is one of my earliest memories I have.

The scooper is made of aluminum.  It does not have a name on it.  I am thinking maybe it was made by a local person.  I am not sure.  Knowing just a little of my family history, I would say it was made between 1900 and 1930.  If someone could prove me wrong, I would love to hear it.

My brother, and two cousins, would all use it.  I know what your thinking.  "They must have stayed sick all the time sharing drinks."  Really, we didn't.  The scooper would get rinsed off every time someone would use it.  And, none of us were really sickly as kids.  I was the only girl, so if I got hurt, I kept going.  I wasn't going to let them little boys show me up.

My Granny died in 2001, and I asked my papa if I could have the scooper.  I felt like, no would appreciate it, like I do.  To anyone else it looks like junk, but to me I would not sell it for a thousand dollars.

My Papa died on the 27th of July of this year, and going through his house, has brought back all this stuff in my head.    All of these memories, are popping back up, that I had forgotten about.

Now I want my kids to understand, how something so old, and not really pretty, can mean so much to me.  This is a wonderful antique for my family, to hold on to.

On this one review,  I am very happy,  I got to share.

  1. OMG! What a neat find! These scoops were also used outdoors along with an oaken bucket hung in the well. When the men would need a quick drink or cooling off they draw a bucket dip the scoop to drink or pour it over their heads to cool off. This is truly a wonderful find!
