Growing Orchids Is Fun

Share and Enjoy:
I have always loved orchids and have wanted to grow them at home but I was afraid that they were way too hard to take care of. My husband likes to give me flowers for special occasions and I tell him I would rather have a plant that will live for a while than flowers that die in a few days. He never listened until my birthday this year when he finally got me an orchid. It was beautiful and the flowers lasted on it for several months. It changed his mind about orchids and when he saw a few that were on clearance really cheap at the store because they were not in tip top shape, he brought them home for me to nurse back to health.

I had no idea what to do with them but it was pretty obvious that they needed to be repotted so I went to Walmart for supplies. There I found a book called Growing Orchids is Fun by Albert P. Hollingsworth. On the front cover there was a big note that said the book was endorsed by the American Orchid Society so I purchased it and hoped it would help.

The book is a small, soft covered book with 102 pages. Inside there are beautiful photographs of orchids in all shapes, sizes and colors. The first 22 pages of the book cover the basics like care and feeding of orchids while he rest of the book deals with the different species of orchids and what makes each one special. While there was some good information in the front of the book, it was really a little too basic to be of much help. I really was hoping for more information in general and more of a what to do if your orchid looks like this chapter. The last half of the book was very informative about the different species of which I knew nothing but that was not the help I needed when I purchased the book.

If you are an orchid lover and are looking for a book that has some basic information and beautiful pictures than this book might be a good addition to your collection. If you are looking for your first book on the care and feeding of your orchids, I would say to look for another book.

  4. I think that it would be awesome if I could grow them. I don't have the slightest bit of a green thumb. I will just have to admire yours.
