Prednisolone Love/Hate It

I have a love/hate relationship with this prescription medicine. My son is on Prednisolone about 2 to 3 times a year for his asthma. Prednisolone is the liquid form of Presidone, which is a steroid.

Now the positive things about this drug is it does work! When my son is having a bad asthma flare up, I give him this drug for 5 days and it helps him breathe better in no time.

Now the negative side of the drug --- the side effects! This drug has some nasty side effects. Some of the side effects my son has experienced while taking this drug is moody, jittery (to the point he just can not sit still), increase hunger, weight gain and puffy cheeks.

Just 3 weeks ago my son was back on this medicine to help with another asthma flare up. This time though he had some side effects he never experienced before. He had flushed cheeks (it looked like he was running a fever) and headaches. He actually did not have the increase hunger or was he bouncing off walls. He was actually very calm and mellow, almost too mellow but it was probably because of the headaches the drug gave him.

So as I said I love/hate this drug. It really does work good for those that need it but the side effects can be hard to deal with.
