Not Your Fathers TV Guide

Growing up my father HAD to have a weekly TV Guide. It was a smallish hand size guide that had a color cover, one good long story inside then maybe a couple other things of interest and of course the actual guide itself all in black and white newsprint.

The only issue that I ever found any interest in was the one that came out in mid summer with the lineup of all the new cartoons that were coming out in the fall. ;)

The subscription price was always pretty obscene… so my mother would never pay for it, even for the school magazine drives, but would instead make sure that she picked up the latest issue every week when she went grocery shopping.

The TV Guide today is bold, in full color and in a much larger magazine format. While TV Guide still has the actual guide inside (which is formatted by area to give you the right channels and program times for your local satellite or cable company) it also tries to be more of an entertainment magazine with articles about celebrities. It doesn’t come close to a People Magazine, but it is more upscale than a rag mag…

While the subscribers price has come down considerably to about $30 for a years subscription, I still think that it is a bit much… Most of the cost has to be in the actual paper and ink as well as the postage and frankly with cable and satellite guides right on the TV as well as online guides I do not see much a use for this paper guide. If people have to have a paper guide, a perfectly good one comes for free in a lot of local Sunday newspapers.

My son likes to check out the TV Guide when it comes in… but once the gift subscription is over we will not be renewing it.
