Dirt Devil Action Vacuum
The Dirt Devil Action Cyclonic Vaccum is a powerful and affordable upright. It has a bag free canister that is clear so when it is full you just pop it off and hold it over the garbage and press the button on the side. The little door pops open and all the crap it sucked out of the rug falls out the bottom. Sometimes you have to give the canister a little tap to get rid of some clinging dirt.
This vacuum works great for dog hair. I have two dogs that lose hair and leave giant dreadlocks laying around like a Rastafarian on chemo. This vacuum makes quick work of the hair in the carpet, but the vacuum scares the dogs off into corners. The level of the vacuum can be adjusted for shag carpeting all the way down to hardwood floor.
I haven't had to change any parts on this vacuum yet, but the filters and belts look fairly inexpensive when I saw them at the store.

Attachments include a small rotatling brush head for steps and tall places and a long reaching point for tight cracks and waving at frightened dogs. Sometimes the suction is so hard that the extension hose shrinks and pinches me, but just enough to keep me awake while I vacuum.
The cord is long enough to plug into the middle of my apartment and I can reach the whole apartment. Sometimes I trip over it because it's so long despite the cord clip at the top of the vacuum's handle.
In my experience, the Dirt Devil Action Cyclonic Vacuum is an excellent tool for removing filth and hair from floors
