Microsoft Bio-Metric Fingerprint Scanner
Share and Enjoy:
I recently received the Microsoft Biometric fingerprint scanner as a present over the holidays. Figured I'd let everyone know the pros and cons of this little piece of hardware/software.
First of all it's an easy install as long as you are running on a 32 bit operating system, if you are running on a 64 bit operating system it will not recognize the hardware nor will it install the software for the program. Once you install the software and plug the fingerprint scanner in you will have to reboot and load back into windows again and still have to use your password one last time for logging into windows. Once you log into windows this time the program will start up and then you have to enter your windows password again into the program where you will also have to register at least two of your finger prints into the program but if you really want you can register all ten of them. Registering the finger prints was fairly easy it just entailed you selecting the finger you want to use and scanning it 4 times to make sure the program has a good record of the finger print. Then once you are finished with all of this you can use it for accessing programs and websites that require logins. This is where it gets tricky.
To access Website logins you have to be using Microsoft's Internet explorer, Unfortunately for me all I use is Firefox as my web browser which means that this just lost most of it's functionality for me. I have been able to use if for accessing a couple games and a password backup program I keep on a thumb drive though that makes at least those a little simpler. As for using it in Internet explorer I still never saw it work while I was logging into various websites anything else which means I am still typing in passwords to various sites. This is a nice program and hardware in theory but has too many down sides to give it higher ratings than I have.
On a special note I was reading various reviews and came across a response from a Microsoft employee when some accused Microsoft of making the fingerprint scanner work only for Microsoft products and the employee denied that it was the case. It leaves me kinda suspicious though since it'll work for very few programs outside the Microsoft family of programs.<!-- @page { margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } -->
