Augmentin - Kicks Germy Butts

Share and Enjoy:
This is a heavy-duty antibiotic.  It’s not cheap, but it really works.

I was bitten by our cat 3 days ago.  The bite was pretty bad but the problem was that even though she is (in her old age) a house kitty and up to date on shots, cat saliva can contain some nasty things.  The bite was so deep that 36 hours later I had a serious infection of my lymph system with a red, hot river creeping up my arm (not blood poisoning, but in the lymph system).

At the clinic they gave me a shot of rocephin, but then a prescription for the augmentin in pill form.  Augmentin is the name for a drug that is a combination of amoxicillin and potassium clavulanate.  It is a broad spectrum antibiotic, and a penicillin relative.  If you are not allergic to penicillin it should be fine to take.  There is a number printed on the pills.  In my case 500/125, which tells the amounts of the two drugs. So my pills have 500 mg of amoxicillin and 125 mg of potassium clavulanate.  I am reading that the normal dose is 250/125, except in the case of severe infections, so I guess we know what I got.  Actually they nearly sent me to the hospital for IV antibiotics.

The pills are quite large.  For someone with an issue with swallowing pills they would probably need to be cut smaller.  Note that taking two of the 250 dose pills is not the same as one 500 dose.  Two of the smaller pills would also double the potassium clavulanate, which you don’t want to do.

For anyone not allergic to penicillin there are very few side effects.  It can occasionally cause vomiting or diarrhea.  It is used for urinary tract infections, respiratory, abdominal and dental infections, and is the drug of choice for animal bites.

Between the shot and this prescription my infection is quickly backing down.  The bad news is that this is NOT a drug that is covered under the Walmart discount generic drug plan.  30 pills are costing $72.  So, I wish I had known that before I went to Walmart.  I would have preferred to support my local hometown drugstore if the cost wasn’t going to be considerably less.

As with any antibiotic, you need to take it till the prescription is all used up.  There is a really good reason for this.  The easy germs will die first.  But you need to make sure that all the germs that may have some resistance to the medicine are killed or they will simple continue to morph into “super bugs.”  All that means is that they are resistant to regular antibiotics, but that is not good.  This is not the only reason that we have so many drug-resistant strains of bacteria, but it does contribute to the problem.

  2. WOW Sharky! glad you're on the better side of that event! I've had a lot of cats through the years and am pretty familiar with their bites. Mebbe you should slip kitty some Listerine? (hehe) just teasing of course. Keep getting better! Good write!
