The Lost City of Z

Share and Enjoy:

The Lost City of Z is a by David Grann. It's a biography about a British explorer, Percy Fawcett, and his life. The book covers everything from his birth to his mysterious death in the Amazon. The book is very interesting and talks about every obsure, but fascinating corner of the story of the Amazonian explorer. It vividly and eloquently brings otherwise confusing or irrelevant stories. While it doesn't follow the tradition of making memorable characters to capture the audience, it makes nature and Fawcett's surroundings meaningful. It's not a terribly exciting book, but that doesn't mean it won't draw you in.

Perhaps the most interesting part of this novel is the author's commitment. To get the best version of the story, he went to the Amazon himself to learn from the natives of the jungle and ask experts. The novel shifts from being a biography to a more present day piece of mystery, and while the second half is not quite as captivating, it is still interesting, and I didn't feel too bogged down by the length, as the book is only 277 (albeit large) pages.

While The Lost City of Z has its flaws, it is still a good read that tells an amazing and unbelievable, yet true story.
