Eating Fire and Drinking Water
For starters, the story has a political setting of the Philippines. It starts with Clara Perez, a journalist of a local paper, who's contemplating about her life and job while trapped in the middle of a heavy traffic on her way to work.
Clara has grown tired of covering trivial subjects all the time and wants to atleast be given an assignment with substance. When she was asked to investigate and write about a fire that ensued in a small street, which happens to kill an old chinese store owner, she discovered a web of complicated stories, leading to her unknown past.
The story has so many interesting characters and events, which makes you feel you're living during the Marcos regime. It tells brutal treatments to student activists whose only aim is to have good government. It also shows a story of a political figure and his innuendos, which we all know happens a lot in many countries.
This book is a no-nonsense fiction. It has an intelligent treatment of its plot.
