Filseclab Personal Firewall

Share and Enjoy:

I've been using this firewall for about four years now.  I have some issues with it, but for the most part it is an effective firewall.  Filseclab Firewall is one of those firewalls that pops up an alert whenever a program tries to access the internet for the first time asking what permissions to give it.  If you want a firewall that can decide this for you automatically, then this firewall is not for you.

When first installed, Filseclab Firewall already has permission for the most popular port numbers automatically set to best protect your computer.  It has several different modes of operation depending on how you'll be using the firewall.  The General Mode is the best for most users.  Setting up the program access is easy and can be completed rather quickly .  Simply opening up a program that wants access to the internet will bring up a pop up asking to “Allow/Deny Always” or Allow/Deny this one time”.  More advanced options can be set within the programs interface such as port numbers, protocols, or even what days/times the program can access the internet.  Software signed by Microsoft are automatically allowed by default (this can be changed in the settings menu), so you don't have to worry about setting up Microsoft software.  Filseclab Firewall also has the options to password protect the program or to set privacy protection to prevent website referrals.

My only problem with Filseclab Firewall is occasionally it will sometimes “lock up”.  By this I mean that the firewall will still perform its job based on the rules already implemented, however, it won't allow for the addition of new rules and won't display the popup until the firewall is restarted.   Fortunately, this doesn't happen too often.

  1. Locking up issues can mean the software is chewing up too much memory, or that the thing has been exploited using a GUI HOOK.

    1. It doesn't use much memory when locked up, so I don't think that's the problem. I'm not familiar with the term "GUI Hook". What is it?
