Broadband on the go with NO CONTRACT! Yes!

Share and Enjoy:

It's fitting that at the moment I'm sitting in an airport since my review is about the new Virgin Mobile Broadband 2 Go.  And yes, I AM using the USB attached wireless device right now.  What prompted me to make this purchase, was the fact that I travel to see my mom a couple times a year, and her condo has no wi-fi connection. None.  Nada.  Can't even steal a wireless connection.  (Not that I recommend stealing wi-fi... I'm just sayin'.)  So when I heard that Virgin Mobile had a wirleless broadband device with NO  MONTHLY COMMITMENT I had to see what it was all about.

From my search online, Best Buy is the only place to get the Virgin Broadband 2 Go device. I comes with preloaded software, a lanyard, and a Quick Start Guide.  It's an easy plug and play setup, but if you need customer service, you have to find the number because the Quick Start Guide doesn't include it.  However, you CAN connect to the Virgin Mobile website anytime you plug in the device even if you haven't purchased any megabytes for usage. So I you can get the 800 number from their site.

After setting up your wireless mobile device, you will be taken to Virgin Mobile's Broadband 2 Go site so you can purchase your "time"/megabytes.  You can choose as much as you'll need, starting at $10.00 (100 MB), up to $60.00 (1GB).  I chose the $40.00 (600MB) "package".  Again, there is no contract.  The drawback here is that the megabytes need to be used within 30 days, so it's a good idea to just buy what you'll use during that time frame.  Also, connections range from "low" to "very good" depending on the coverage in the area.  It's a good idea to check out the coverage for an area if you travel.  Also, I don't think it supports Mac's.

You can purchase your megabytes with cash, debit, or credit.  Any Virgin Mobile location will sell "Top Up" cards for cash, and then you  enter a code to add megabytes to your account.  If you prefer, you can purchase megabytes online with a credit or debit card.  As I said before, even if your "time" runs out, you will still be able to connect to the Virgin Mobile website with the device.

This method of connecting to the internet is NOT for the heavy user.  It was designed for the casual user or for someone (like me) who needs it for occasional travel.  It wouldn't be cost effective to use all the time.  Also consider the cost of the USB device, which is $149.99.  To me it is well worth it for those times I need it when I travel.

As I said before, this isn't for everyone, but if you think you might be interested, here's the website for more information.
