Nokia 5310 XpressMusic - Little phone, Big noise
Cons: Web browsing is very clumsy, mediocre camera.
May I begin by saying the term "cell phone" is a vast generalisation. There are so many different types of phone on today's market, from web-happy smart phones to iPod-slaying music phones and everything in between.
The Nokia 5310 XpressMusic, as its name would suggest, is one of the latter. Don't you email-addicts and business users judge it just yet, though. This miniscule phone (roughly 9mm thick) packs a powerful punch.
Let's start with the price. Mine was bought for a little under $150. That would be a very good price for the phone itself, but in this box also came a 2GB MicroSD card, a set of headphones and a powerful speaker. The value contained in this small package simply beggars belief.
The main reason this phone will be bought is for its music capabilities. With the 2GB memory card capable of storing almost 500 songs, with the option of expanding to anything up to an 8GB card, and 30MB of internal memory, music fans will not be disappointed. Neither will they be disappointed with the music player. This is a well-oiled application that can sort songs by name, artist, album and genre as well as being able to create custom playlists. The music player can be controlled by either the face buttons or the three music keys on the left-hand-side of the screen. This comes in very handy when you are texting and want to switch songs without sifting through various menus. The only thing this music player is lacking in is the ability to create a play queue.
The battery powered speaker that comes with the phone is magnificent; Very loud and with plenty of bass. The same cannot be said, however, with the standard Nokia headphones. I found it difficult to keep them in my ears at all, especially while on the move. The phone has a standard 3.5mm headphone jack so any after-market headphones will fit.
The Nokia 5310 XpressMusic has the Opera Mini web browser pre installed, as well as the phone's standard browser. However, with its small screen and slow network speeds, this phone is not very well suited to surfing the web.
All in all, the Nokia is a solid investment for any music lover. It's small, powerful and very, very loud. A top music phone.
