WD Passport 120GB Portable Hard Drive

Share and Enjoy:

This drive turned out to be one of the better deals that I've been fortunate to come across.  A couple of years ago, one of the local computer stores was closing down, and they were liquidating their remaining inventory.  I made several visits to the store during their clearance, and picked up various items that I had been wanting.  On the last visit that I made, I saw that they still had a stack of external hard drives, and since I can never have enough storage space, I decided to check them out.   Along with several no-name models, they had a couple of brand new 120GB Western Digital Passport drives still sitting on the shelves, so I picked one up.

When I got the drive home, I unpacked it from the box and checked it out.  The drive itself is very small, lightweight, and stylish. The top of the drive is metallic and silver in color, and the bottom is covered in some sort of rubberized coating, which helps to keep it in place when it's sitting on my desk.  One end of the drive has a fold down flap that conceals the USB and power ports, and the front of the drive has a blue indicator light to show when the drive is connected and active.

Using the drive is extremely simple.  Just connect one end of a USB cable to the drive and the other end of the cable to your PC.  That's it.  No separate power adapter is required because the drive receives all the power it needs over the single USB cable.  I find that to be extremely convenient when compared to the other 3.5" external drives I own, which require their own (usually large) power supplies. Since it uses USB 2.0, data is transferred very quickly to and from the drive.

I've used my drive several times at home and at work, and have never had any problems with it.  I purchased a carrying case made specifically for this drive from Western Digital, to secure the drive and cable when I'm carrying it around.  I found that to be a suprisingly nice accessory that adds just a little bit of a extra safety during my travels.

Overall, I'm very pleased with this drive, especially considering the phenomenal deal I got on it, and I would happily recommend it to anyone looking for a nice, small, external hard drive.
