Bic Wite Out Extra Coverage- As Good as Promised

“Extra coverage” claims to be able to cover red ink, permanent marker, more.  It performed well without extra coats, and was easy to write on after corrections.

I can always put correction fluid to the test because I not only use it for fixing errors on paper, but I also will paint a spot of it on the base of collectables, or other dark colored items so I can mark them with a number or name.  Extra coverage sounded good.

After shaking the bottle well and opening it, the brush seemed to come out of the bottle with difficulty.  There was a plug of semi-hardened product around the collar of the brush.  I had to clean this off with my fingers: a messy job.

The brush is a tapered rectangle of foam which bends easily.  It is softer than the brushes in some other brands, but performed well once I got used to how it felt.

Use on paper-
I had never used this particular brand before, so I put it to a test.  First I wrote on a piece of blank paper with several different kinds of pens and markers.  Then I tried to cover about half of each sample with the Wite-Out.  I let it dry for 3 minutes, and wrote over the correction fluid with the same kind of ink.  All samples covered with only one coat of the correction fluid.

First is black ballpoint pen: coverage was good, write-over was smooth and looks about the same as the original.

Orange highlighter: coverage was good, write-over was poor- marker dragged and the ink does not look the same as it does on paper at all.

Black gel ink: coverage was good, write-over was smooth and looks about the same as the original.

Black permanent marker: coverage was good, write-over is fair– marker dragged and the ink looks slightly different.

Red white-board marker: coverage was good, write-over is fair– marker dragged and the ink looks slightly different.

Red gel ink: coverage was good, write-over was smooth and looks about the same as the original.

Use as a white background for marking other products–
It went on a plastic item smoothly with one coat and made a nice base on which to write with an extra-fine Sharpie.

Conclusion–
Bic Wite-Out Extra Coverage really will cover tough errors with only one coat.  It goes on smoothly and is not gummy when new. (Most of these fluids get gummy as they age, I can’t speak to that aspect of this product yet.)  Write-over quality is mixed, depending on how much the ink used is designed to soak into the paper.

Over time this white-out product gets gummy the way they all seem too.  Shake well, and if all else fails you will need to get a new bottle.
