Recreation / Martial Arts / Kamas Not Good

not martial review image

My son's Tae Kwon Do instructor was offering a class to learn how to use the weapon Kamas.
Kamas are mainly used for demos. A student can learn tricks with these.

The Kamas my son's instructor decided to go with were wooden kamas with an 18 inch handle and a 7 inch blade. He went with the wooden Kamas because they are thought to be easier then metal blade kamas for beginning students learning, both for safety and learning how to move the weapon around.

Everyone from the instructor to the students was disappointed in these Kamas. They were not made of good quality. My son lost his blade on the one. It basically came loose from the handle. My husband was able to do a temporary fix to it.

But the end of the 3 month class on Kamas, every student in my son's Tae Kwon Do school had a broken Kama. They did not use these overly rough. Some dropped on the ground while trying to learn how to catch them when you throw them in the air, but they should not have broke when they landed.

My son's instructor said he will not be ordering these Kamas in the future. He will go to the metal bladed ones.
As a parent I am glad to hear that because these Kamas are definitely a waste of money. I am sure the metal bladed ones are much better or let's hope they are!

  • In the image I can see where the blade would break. This would have been better perhaps made in one piece so there would be no joint weaknesses.

    • I 100% agree with you, froggy. If it was one solid piece of wood it probably would have been much better.

  • Boy, I HATE cheap-made products. Although I'll never have the need for one of these - I'm glad you are pointing it out to others so they can avoid it.
